Innovations in Teaching and Learning
Innovation in Teaching and Learning Method
“Innovation in education means doing what’s best for all students. Teachers, lessons, and curriculum have to be flexible. We have to get our students to think and ask questions. We need to pique their curiosity, and find ways to keep them interested. Innovation means change, so we have to learn that our students need more than the skills needed to pass the state assessments given every spring. We have to give them tools that will make them productive in their future careers.” – Kimberly
Me myself have a same understanding on this and what important in the innovation in teaching is an evidence in which that we always need to take a feedback/reflection from our student on the technique that we try to introduce or apply in teaching and learning in term of many aspect.
Case study
Case study is a method that I am adopting to enhance student learning in order to achieve deeper understanding in the subject matter. The case study is designed for students to make them able to describe, analyse, relate and suggest suitable improvement in an issue related to the context of the subject. This promotes critical thinking among students.
Cooperative Problem Based Learning
CPBL model is a combination of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Cooperative Learning (CL) to emphasize learning and solving problems in small student teams (consisting of 3-5 students) in a medium sized class, of up to 60 students for one floating academic staff or facilitator. The CPBL model is composed of three phases; viz. Phase 1 consists of the problem identification and analysis stage, Phase 2 is the learning, application and solution formulation stage and Phase 3 is the generalization, internalization and closure stage. Activities involved in CPBL is based upon student centred learning (SCL) in order to achieve the learning outcome of the subject. I have implemented CPBL approach during lecturing Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition subject in semester 2 session 2018/2019.
Blended Learning
Blended learning is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods. It requires the physical presence of both teacher and student, with some elements of student control over time, place, path, or pace. The usefulness of ULearn system is utilised to ensure student able to access the material and do the activity that we prepare for them in class. At the same time, it is easy to monitor the traffic of the Ulearn system whether it is being access by the student or not.
Uses of Technology and advanced simulation software in class
I am also incorporating the utilization of technology in enhancing student learning in my class. For example, using C compiler software is making things easier to the student to understand the C programming class as the output of the programming can be easily monitored. Similarly to other classes such as embedded system design, student can use the Proteus software together with the c builder in order to learn on the basic instructional set for the PIC embedded system in order to understand the basic fundamental usage of it. Other than that, MATLab is also one of the advance tool that we use in computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR) class to look into the application of each discussed algorithm on CVPR
Despite the effort to incorporate technology assisted materials during learning activities, the other aspect that I am educating my students is on how to critically study the information found in the World Wide Web for learning purposes. Guidance is also been given on how to do effective information searching in the internet as well as in the university online resources.
Academic Writing and Conference Presentation
Academic writing and conference presentations are two teaching methods that I practice during my supervision of post graduate students. Through this practices, student’s critical thinking, confidence, communication and networking skill are enhanced. This skills also introduced to the student in class as well in which that some of the assignment and lab report is written in journal writing format.
Innovative Product Competition Participation
Participation in innovative product competition is a medium where I utilise to enhanced students creativity and critical thinking during conducting related research in the Final Year Student Project and M.Sc. research. Competition in academic world comes in many level up to an international level. Recently, me and my team had entered KIK Competition for University awam Level in August 2019 and we won a gold medal and our work is awarded with The Best Innovation Award.
Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
Reflection note is used to reflect the progress of the accomplishment on the subject matters and the T&L process; outlining strengths, weaknesses and improvement action to be taken by either lecturers or students. Thus, the reflection notes submitted by the students in week 4 and week 14 of the lectures is applied accordingly. In other words, it helps in ensuring continuous quality improvement (CQI) of the subject and the changes were made suited on the current batch of student. Based on the students’ feedback, a few improvement strategies are being implemented for enhancing learning process.
Evaluation on Teaching & Supervision
I appreciate feedback from students on the impact of my teaching and supervision. At the end of each teaching semester, I always ask students to give feedback on the strength and things that need to be improved from both sides (themselves and me) based on the current teaching and learning experience. Students’ comments are always in consideration in improving my way of teaching as well as building up my charisma as an academician. The reflection is not just on the subject matter but including the learning process itself. As such, the action plan will not just applicable to the learning of my subject but encompass the overall learning process and each individuals’ personal development.
Teaching Evaluation
Evaluation on teaching conducted by university for the subject that I thought were done in every semester. The targeted mark score is > 4 for each semester.
